Department Summary


Within the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health?s Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS), world-renowned scholars continue to develop knowledge on the links between the environment and health, as well as educating scientists, public health leaders, and policymakers to inform strategies for preventing harmful exposures while promoting healthier ambient, built, and occupational environments.

Position Summary



The Director of Continuing Education (CE) will work under the direction of the Southern California NIOSH Education and Research Center (SCERC) to establish a strategic plan and implement a CE program that seeks to improve workers' health and safety in Region IX. The Program Director of CE will assess the needs for occupational safety and health education and develop and implement a series of educational activities (e.g., webinars, short courses, workshops, conferences, etc.) that respond to the needs and improve workers' health and safety in Region IX. The educational activities will primarily serve occupational safety and health professionals and allied professionals, but may also serve workers. The incumbent will also develop and secure new sources of revenue, including grants and contracts, to support CE Program activities. These objectives will require the incumbent to develop and evaluate educational materials and educational activities; arrange logistics for activities; prepare written reports, including reports to the sponsor; prepare grant and contract proposals; develop and implement marketing strategies; build and maintain a professional network across Region IX; engage with the CE Program External Advisory Committee and SCERC Executive Committee; develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with other NIOSH-funded centers, the UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health Program, and other aligned organizations; develop budgets and monitor financial expenditures; communicate with SCERC, departmental personnel and UCLA personnel to ensure compliance with institutional policies; develop and implement program operating and administrative policies; maintain program records and data bases; and other responsibilities as assigned by the SCERC Director of required by the sponsor. The incumbent operates with a large degree of independence in executing all responsibilities, under the direction of the SCERC Director and guidance from established policies and procedures stated by the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, the Fielding School of Public Health, and other UCLA campus entities that oversee grants, contracts, fund management and human resources. Independence of action is a requirement of the position. Applicant must be self-starter with entrepreneurial spirit.

Qualifications



  • Demonstrated experience developing and monitoringbudgets to meet sponsor's guidelines and requirements. (Required)
  • Experience with computer systems such as Windows orMacOS, and software used for word processing, e-mail,calendars, spreadsheets, presentations, referencemanagement, and video conferencing. (Required)
  • Advanced project management experience, including skillsand ability to work independently to full project goals andmanage multiple timelines. (Required)
  • Knowledge and experience in administration, preferably in a research and/or academic setting, tofulfill the center's goals and mission. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of contracts and grants, preferably both in pre and post- award. Demonstratedknowledge of fund management terminology, principles, and practices. (Required)
  • Ability to work under pressure, to establish priorities, and to meet strict deadlines. (Required)
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including establishing and maintaining timelines for multiplesimultaneous activities and coordinating activities of groups at remote locations. (Required)
  • Knowledge about occupational health, public health, and trainee programs. (Required)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to accurately and effectively communicate to awide spectrum of individuals, including faculty, staff and external audiences. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Master's Degree in public health, business, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
