Job Description

Manager of Space & Long-Range Planning

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

As a part of the SCL Office of the Vice President's unit, the SCL Facilities team supports the student campus experience, by ensuring safe, clean, and operational spaces for students to live, eat, recreate, connect, and engage with each other. With this mission in mind, the team is focused on helping our customers and end-users navigate critical decisions regarding the use and maintenance of their space. This is done through analyzing risks and associated costs, exploring additional services that add value, considering safety and security factors, and ensuring business continuity. Members of this group are passionate about helping customers, think critically about how small decisions can have large impacts, and have a knack for integrating people and physical places. This team is the "foundation" upon which the student experience here at Cornell is built.

The Manager of Space and Long-Range Planning will facilitate the management of space accommodating routine programmatic needs throughout the Student and Campus Life (SCL) portfolio. This role will conduct space usage studies to assess efficiencies, analyze inventory, measure against metrics, and programmatic appropriateness as well as recommend and implement space solutions including developing deliverables and presentations effectively communicating methodologies and findings. While fostering strong partnerships and collaborating with a wide variety of key stakeholders, this role will receive, understand, and prioritize, divisional programmatic needs in conjunction with the deferred maintenance conditions to generate long-range facility plans and ensure appropriate communication and guidance to building occupants to ensure safe and consistent practices related to space use procedures and policies.

A successful Manager will effectively demonstrate excellent communication skills (both customer-facing and internal with team members) to make complex space planning issues understandable for clients and help foster strong partnerships with key stakeholders. In a deadline-driven environment, the Manager will be self-motivated and able to work well independently and as a team player to ensure the overall support of the unit. This candidate should also possess space management knowledge and a desire to continually learn new skills and technical functions to support solid decision-making and critical thinking skills while managing multiple priorities.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

  • Technical familiarity with Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Trimble SketchUp, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft 365 software.
  • Ability to walk facilities routinely in support of the space analysis process. Must be able to negotiate stairs, ladders, and a variety of mechanical spaces on occasion.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:
