This Fair Labor Standards clerical position serves as the first point of contact for various constituencies, including Polish constituents, looking for assistance from the Department of Labor. A typical day might start with translating in a hearing to help Polish citizens understand the process and legal requirements to recoup wages and end with responding to emails seeking help from the Department of Labor. Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and two years of office experience.
2. Requires the ability to keyboard accurately at 45 wpm.
3. Requires ability to speak, write and translate Polish at a colloquial level.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs intake functions on mail, email, and online complaint applications received by the Department of Labor (DOL). Reviews complaints for jurisdiction, completeness, and correctness. Data enters complaints into the online system. Screens claims and creates new paper and electronic files. Works to resolve issues with wage claims applications.
  2. Provides responses to general inquiries involving employment of minors. Reviews child employment certificates for correctness. Reviews and keyboards information of night waivers of child performers into a data base. Identifies and forwards child labor violations and detailed child labor inquiries to the attention of managers and compliance officers.
  3. Answers multiple telephone lines for the Fair Labor Standards Division, including phone lines handling minimum wage and overtime, child labor and wage payment and collection act inquiries - Forwards technical calls to appropriate staff and answers general inquiries. Responsible for checking and responding to voicemails for these lines. Serves as backup receptionist as needed. Reports call data weekly. Communicates in Polish with claimants about resolving incomplete wage claim applications.
  4. Performs translating functions for Polish-speaking clients seeking information and assistance from the Department of Labor who cannot read or speak English. Responds to in-person, telephone and written inquiries concerning Fair Labor Standards issues for Polish constituents. Performs translation for other divisions of the agency when required for Polish-speaking constituents including but not limited to attendance at informal and formal legal proceedings to translate between parties and ground rules for proceedings. Records interactions of Polish translation services into a database daily for Polish-speaking constituents including but not limited to attendance at informal and formal legal proceedings to translate between parties and ground rules for proceedings. 
  5. Proofreads and translates materials produced by the agency for Polish audiences regarding labor laws. Assists with outreach projects as directed by section managers toward Polish speaking communities.
  6. Responds to general inquiries received by Fair Labor Standards email addresses. Forwards technical inquiries to the appropriate staff. Reports email volume weekly.
  7. Serves as designated back up person for the processing and verification of monies collected by the agency. Keyboards checks received by the agency into the agency’s Fiscal Tracking system database. Verifies that the information correctly entered into the database.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

1. Two (2) years of experience working on a multi-line phone system.
2. One (1) year of experience with office practices, procedures, and programs.
3. One (1) year of extensive skills in writing, composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
4. One (1) year of utilizing Microsoft Office Suites, with a heavy emphasis in database skills.
5. One (1) year of experience with general office filing techniques.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1. This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
2. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
3. Requires ability to utilize the Polish language in the performance of all duties.
