Job Description

Job Overview:

The Space Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Space Team at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). This role involves planning, prioritizing, and delegating work to ensure the successful execution of various space-related projects. The Space Team Manager will collaborate with external architects, review project proposals, and ensure that all design and construction projects meet the required standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Management: Lead the Space Team by planning and prioritizing tasks, delegating responsibilities, and balancing workloads to ensure efficient operation.
  • Project Planning: Develop detailed project briefs to provide clear guidance for external architects on masterplan development and larger projects.
  • Design Oversight: Oversee the production of detailed design layouts and plans, including furniture specifications, ensuring all designs meet project requirements.
  • AutoCAD Expertise: Utilize AutoCAD version 2018 or higher to create or modify floor plans to scale, and provide guidance on design intent and construction drawings.
  • Project Review: Analyze project proposals and budgets, providing recommendations and direction in conjunction with the Government Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
  • Issue Resolution: Identify and address issues that could jeopardize project success, proactively implementing changes in scope as necessary.
  • Cost Estimation: Create and review independent cost estimates for construction projects, submitting them for final approval by the government.
  • Furniture Layout: Draft and review furniture layouts for modular systems and office furniture, ensuring optimal space utilization.
  • Space Assignments: Support the negotiation and implementation of space assignments in line with organizational needs.
  • Customer Service: Provide strong customer service by maintaining productive relationships with colleagues, consultants, and clients.
  • Problem Solving: Utilize strong problem-solving and analytical skills to overcome challenges and ensure project success.
  • Communication: Exhibit strong writing and communication skills to effectively document and convey project details and updates.
  • Independent Work: Manage assignments independently, demonstrating the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Technical Proficiency: Utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Outlook, and other relevant software to manage tasks efficiently.
  • Relocation/Facility Projects: Manage large relocation and facility projects, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption to operations.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in managing space planning and facility projects, particularly in a government or research environment.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (version 2018 or higher) and the ability to read and interpret floor plans and construction drawings.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and delegation skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
  • Experience in creating and managing project budgets and cost estimates.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Prior experience managing large-scale relocation or facility projects.

This position requires a detail-oriented professional with a strong background in space planning, project management, and customer service. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a government or research environment and will be able to manage complex projects with a high degree of independence.
